Nigeria V Japan Match highlight
Japan take on Atlanta 1996 gold medalists Nigeria in their opening encounter in Group B on Friday (5 August).
Kick-off is set for 2am BST (Friday). The football
matches of the Rio 2016 Olympics will be telecasted live on BBC One, BBC
Four and Red Button in the United Kingdom. In addition to this, there
will be up to 24 HD video streams to follow the event on desktop, mobile
and tablet.
Below is a list of all Olympics 2016 Football broadcasters from across the world.
Overview
Nigeria
is looking to add to the one gold medal they won at the 1996 Atlanta
games. It is their seventh appearance in the Olympics. Only Argentina
and Brazil have appeared more times than the African nation. The 2008
runners-up have always excelled in the youth tournaments with the
Nigeria U17 side winning the U17 World Cup in Chile last year.
Samson
Siasia is leading the team for the second time following his stint at
the Beijing Olympics in 2008, when the Super Eagles had to settle for
silver after they lost in the final to Lionel Messi's Argentina side.
They achieved qualification this time by winning the African U23
championships, and will again hope to make it to the latter stages of
the competition. Jon Obi Mikel is the most recognised member of the
team, and will have to shoulder most of the responsibility of guiding
the younger players.
Japan's best performance in the Olympics is a bronze medal at the
1968 games held in Mexico. They came close in 2012, but lost the third
place match to Asian rivals South Korea. The Blue Samurai will hope to
replicate their performance from 2012 and look to go a step further.
Arsenal
supporters will have a vested interest in Japan's fortunes, as their
forward line is being led by Takuma Asano, who was Arsene Wenger's
second summer signing in this summer's transfer window. Apart from the
former Sanfrecce Hiroshima forward, the coach will look to the three
overage players to help the team progress in the tournament.
Nigeria
lead the head-to-head record between the two teams in the Olympics.
They have met on three occasions with Nigeria winning two, their most
recent win coming in the 2008 edition at Beijing.
